Outstanding book for the collector !

This is a magnificent album of gorgeous double page color spreads. Everything from pedal cars, die cast, tinplate, and other materials.A useful feature is the inclusion of the same figure in each spread so that one can immediately see the comparative sizes from one to another. This is especially useful in the case of the early Matchbox which were not made to any consistent scale. Instead they wer made to fit the box!Thus the overall dimensions in inches are given instead.More modern diecast is often made in 1:50 scale (metric O guage) and 1:43 scale is close enough to look well on an O guage model train layout.Not a reference but a dream book: Especially the hard-used timplate Buddy L and pedal cars which were not made as collector's items.I well remember the Doepke line of construction equipment made in the late forties. Twelve fifty then, now extremely collectable and expensive.

I'm glad that I purchased this book in hard copy. It has been updated since the first version, which I have on Kindle. This new version contains using radio in conjunction to computers, and also has a bit about Echolink, which allows hams to use VoIP to me QSOs DX without needing an HF radio or an antenna. This book updates radios, and if you've just gotten licensed, give it a read! It'll show you that the days of the typical "ham geek" being cloistered in a ham shack with towers in the back yard are (can be?) history. While DXing is still more fun with an old boat anchor HF beast, it shows that a lot of the same can be done with a computer. Logbooks on PC are explained, too. Nothing has changed too much about radio signals but a LOT has changed about how we create, send, receive and respond contacts using some of the new equipment. Ideally, you have both editions of this boom. But this book is completely new and worth getting, even if you have the precious version. If you're not licensed, this will not help you get that license, but if you have an interest, Mr. Silver (I think he's a PhD, actually) will teach you in an easily graspable and fun way.

I'm always a bit suspicious of the "Dummies" and "Idiots" books, as many of them really short on information. But this book is really full of information about how to get started in ham radio. It is well organized and well written. One note: this has very little detail about how to pick out your first radio; plenty of general information, but it is not a product selection guide. But if you read it, you will realize, as the author recommends, that the best way to buy a radio is to make some friends in the ham radio community and get some help picking out equipment. But I can't recommend this book enough....really helpful.

My goals with this book were twofold, picking up knowledge helping me get licensed, and picking up skills to actually operate the gear.The book has a general overview of everything HAM can do. It's not pretty deep on actual details. For someone new to the subject, it actually was kind of surreal. Disappointingly, it's all about the process of getting licensed, not the skills or knowledge to get licensed.There's extensive information about building your own antenna, how to organize a computer desk and multiple stationary radios, and designing your own room dedicated to HAM radio. Once again, in a for dummies book, is that going to be of interest to someone new to the subject?In summary, somewhat entertaining overview of everything you can do with a HAM radio that you'll want to read front to back. I wished I had gotten a book focusing more on the beginner and teaching hands-on skills.

This is an introduction to the Ham Radio hobby, rather than an in-depth technical look at what you'll need to pass your first exam. What I was looking for--but did not find--was the card-stock summary of the most important points, aka the "cheat-sheet" which I'm used to finding in these books. There is some good information in here--I would suggest pairing this with a more technical book in order to pass your Technician exam and get that first call sign ! --73's, KE0IKD

The author is a well-known radio amateur who writes a regular column in QST, the largest ham radio magazine. In this book he gives a broad overview of the hobby, introducing the newcomer to its many facets. It takes the reader through the process of earning a ham license, then shows the new ham what he can do with that license. I plan to buy a copy for each graduate of our radio club's licensing course. The new edition of the book (August, 2013) updates all the information in the original. Outstanding book for anyone with an interest in amateur radio.

The book is five years old and doesn't match the current FCC regulations. It is mostly useless.

Decent book that starts with your general overview, history, and then onward to a little theory, before moving into practical portions. It has some good pointers along the way also, but realistically you'll be better prepared for your licensing exam by just doing some practice tests you can find for free on the Internet. Still a good introductory book though.

Bought thinking it could replace original technician study guide. It is not what I thought it was, but is very informative about how to make a first setup once you get a license.

Had to learn Ham Radio in one big hurry, so ordered and received this book....helped quite a bit.....

About the Author
William A. Bullough is a Professor Emeritus of History at California State University, Hayward. In 1970, he received his Ph.D. degree from the University of California, Santa Barbara, after teaching in the state’s public schools for ten years. He is the author of Cities and Schools in the Gilded Age: The Evolution of an Urban Institution (1974), The Blind Boss and His City: Christopher Augustine Buckley and Nineteenth-Century San Francisco (1979), and articles in The San Francisco Irish, 1850-1976, (James P. Walsh, ed., 1978), The Historian, Pacific Historical Review, and California History. Professor Bullough is an accomplished photographer who has published and exhibited his prints and written articles for Darkroom Photography and similar journals. He is currently engaged in an investigation of the work of several nineteenth-century photographers of California for use as historical documents and assembling a selection of his own images for publication.

Richard B. Rice received his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. in history from the University of California, Berkeley. He was a Staff Assistant to the President and Assistant to the Vice President of the University of California before going to California State University, Hayward, where he also served as a Department Chairman, Division Head, and Dean. He taught United States and California history at Hayward from 1960 to 1995, part of that time as an Emeritus Professor on a faculty early retirement program. He is also an associate of the Winthrop Associates, a cultural research firm, and operates a 300-acre farm in northeastern California.

Richard J. Orsi is an Emeritus Professor of History at California State University, Hayward. A graduate of Occidental College in Los Angeles, he received his doctorate from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He has published articles and book reviews in California History, Pacific Historian, Agricultural History, and The Journal of American History. He is the author of A List of References for the History of Agriculture in California (1974) and is nearing completion of another book, “A Railroad and the Development of the American West: The Southern Pacific Company, 1860-1930.” HE has received fellowships from the Woodrow Wilson Foundation, the Huntington Library, and the Newberry Library. He is currently editor of California History, the quarterly of the California Historical Society. He also edited (with Alfred A. Runtle and Marlene Smith-Baranzini) Yosemite and Sequoia: A Century of California National Parks (1993).

A young Sioux woman tossing with fever on a cot; a father begging his wife for help; a mother standing uncertainly in her kitchen with a 12-gauge shotgun: from these fragments of memory, evoked by the narrator as the novel opens, Watson builds a simple but powerful tale. It is Montana in 1948, and young David Hayden's father, Wesley, is sheriff of their small town--a position he inherited from his domineering father. Wesley is overshadowed by his older brother, Frank, a war hero who is now the town doctor. When Marie, the Sioux woman who works for the Haydens, fall ill, she adamantly resists being examined by Frank. Some probing reveals that Frank has been molesting the Indian women in his care. Wesley's dilemma--should he turn in his own brother?--is intensified when Marie is found dead and David confesses that he saw his uncle near the house before she died. The moral issues, and the consequences of following one's conscience, are made painfully evident here. Watson is to be congratulated for the honesty of his writing and the purity of his prose. Watson (In a Dark Time, 1980), winner of the 1993 Milkweed National Fiction Prize, offers a lean, gaunt narrative rich with implication about a 12-year-old boy who witnesses the anguish of his sheriff father, who is forced to arrest his own brother for rape. David Hayden, now a history teacher, narrates the events of over 40 years ago, when his father, trained as a lawyer, was in his second term as sheriff of Bentrock, a small community of 2,000 close to the Canadian border. David's grandfather was also once a sheriff in a place where the land is harsh, the wind strong, and the sky endless. Meanwhile, David's Uncle Frank, a war hero, is a doctor, and the plot unfolds when Marie Little Soldier, the Haydens' housekeeper, falls sick. She screams when Uncle Frank treats her--then reveals that Frank has a reputation as a rapist of Indian women. David's father investigates and wrests from Frank a promise that he won't rape any more Indians. But then Marie dies unexpectedly, and David reveals information that leads his father to suspect that Frank had something to do with the death. He arrests Frank, but locks him in his own basement instead of in jail. The rest of Watson's story treats the consequences of that arrest: grandfather Hayden threatens his sheriff son, excusing the war hero uncle's sexual rapacity as normal instinct (``You know Frank's always been partial to red meat''); and Frank, after busting all the jelly and preserve jars in the basement where he's imprisoned, kills himself, whereupon the sheriff packs up his wife and son and moves away. It is a required textbook for the class; I gave it a 4 star because it is not a well-organized book. A lot of information is crammed together. That being said, this is the ONLY book you need if you want to take the WOCNCB certification test. I bought several wound care study guides from Amazon including Wound Care certification Study guide by Jayesh B. Shah, MD (the information is too basic, not helpful) and CWCN Exam Practice questions by Mometrix (not helpful either; the book has a high rating at Amazon because the owner of the company promises you a free DVD if you would give the book a good rating). Anyways, I passed the board exam and would want to share my experience with people and to help people save some money too.

Book is well written and thorough, easy to read with great illustrations. Love the kindle sample that can free with it. Will now buy the Kindle version D/T ease of reading. and it has great pictures.

About the Author
Matthias Otto is Professor of Analytical Chemistry at the TU Bergakademie Freiberg in Germany. He was born in Dresden (Germany) and did all his studies at the University of Leipzig. In 1984 he moved to Freiberg (Germany) as a lecturer and was appointed full Professor there in 1987. Since that time he has taught almost all aspects of Analytical Chemistry mainly within the curricula of chemistry, applied sciences and geoecology and organizes courses in basic and advanced chemometrics. He is author and editor of successful textbooks in analytical chemistry.
